Crystal was a dedicated conductor at the best orchestra in town, guided by her deep love for the music and infectious enthusiasm that supported her musicians. However, she had one little weakness: she was really not very agile. That same clumsiness usually turned into silly and sometimes unpredictable side effects in rehearsals and performances.

On one bright, afternoon ahead of a major concert, Crystal stepped onto the podium, her bubbling excitement going through the roof, and knocked over her music stand, with sheets flying all over. The musicians oohed with laughter as Crystal hastened to bend down and gather the pages, the tops of her cheeks reaching a glowing bright pink. She coolly brushed it off and went on conducting the rehearsal with her high spirit.

At one point, Crystal decided to add a little drama to her conducting during the performance. She raised her baton in a highly exaggerated manner and then, with a flourish, brought it down to give the cue to start playing the work. Unfortunately, that baton flew out of her grasp and landed in the lap of an elderly man seated in the audience. Of course, the audience erupted in laughter, but Crystal coolly recovered by bowing for the errant baton and continuing to conduct as if all were business as usual.
Another more humorous incident occurred during rehearsal in one place in the very challenging piece. Crystal, determined to get every note just correct, was moving with energy across the podium when she tripped over a cable and fell into the percussion section, thereby causing a comic series of drum beats and cymbal crashes. The orchestra burst out laughing, and Crystal, never one to lose her good humor, laughed along with them before resuming work at hand.

Yet, despite all her mishaps, Crystal’s concerts were invariably a success. Her love of music and her ability to laugh at herself made her popular with the orchestra and the audience alike. Her mistakes added a charming note of humour and humanity to the rarefied atmosphere of classical music.
And so, Crystal went on conducting her orchestra with glee and vigor, showing the world that a bit of klutziness could add to the magic of music.
