My Review:
The Black Sol by Sachin Warty is an intricately woven thriller that engages the reader till the very last page. In the Northeast Indian region, where most of the action is set, the author paints a rich and dangerous portrait that is a delight and awe some at the same time. This has perhaps been influenced by the fact that Warty is a former Colonel of the Indian Army and this gives credence to the militaristic content of the plot, deepening Mihir and his life story.
The prose is also fast, with commendable pacing of the rises and falls in action and suspense. Warty elegantly connects the ideas of treason, fidelity, and the struggle for retribution, crafting a plot that has many layers and is fascinating as it is complex. The focus on Mihir’s psychological turmoil makes the story richer in context and even transcends the run of the mill thrillers.
There are flaws in the novel though. Some audiences may think that the violence and brutality is graphically excessive, while the sub plot is too tedious to follow at certain instances. In addition, the audience that is not used to such situations may find the military jargon quite overwhelming.
Merits of The Book:
1. Interesting Storyline: The plot is a joy ride from the beginning to the end as it has the appropriate amount of twists and turns, keeping the reader’s attention even after the prediction. The suspense is more or less constant, therefore it is a page turner.
2. Realistic Depiction of Military Elements: The author, Sachin Warty, has an interesting biography since he was a colonel in the Indian army and this plays a huge role in the military elements of the tale, making it seem plausible. This seriousness helps a lot in making the story and the experiences of the main character believable.
3. Complicated male protagonist: Mihir is an interesting character as he is not perfect. His own struggles with guilt, loss, and drinking issues make for a more interesting telling of the story as one would wish to know the reasons that make him fight to the end in search for the truth.
4. Lively Background: The northeast region of India which the novel is based on, has a splendid description. The geography is an important aspect of the narrative contributing to its mood and conflict. This interesting location makes the book different from other thriller novels.
5. Exploration of The Paternalistic Values of Justice: “Nothing is as dangerous to a cause as betrayal, loyalty and justice” – Such messages in the novel add an interesting angle to the book. If you’re wondering how these two are connected and why they’re even included, they both address important issues that make one think about society and its morals.
6. Fast-Paced Narrative: The novel’s faster pacing is exactly what the story requires since there is an apt mix of actions, suspense, and thinking. This makes the reader interested and concerned about the result of the story.
7. Supporting Characters Brought To Life: The secondary characters are fleshed out and serve as a further enrichment of the narrative. Every character has a purpose and adds something to the main storyline, further enriching the plot.
Overall, The Black Sol is engaging and stirring as a thriller, combining elements of adventure, mystery, and psychology. I would give this book 4.5 stars. Given the interesting plot, characterization and description of the locale, I would consider the book indubitably noteworthy. It has however a few minor issues which will not deter the readers especially those who love reading psychological thrillers or stories having the other end of northeast India.
